His talk, titled “Cellular Heterogeneity in Aortic Valve Patterning”, focused the role different types of aortic valve cells may have on development and disease.

Recent PhD graduate Amirala, previous post-doc Hooi H. Ng, and PhD student Sophie Ashbrook, alongside our PI, publish a manuscript in the American Journal of Physiology: Heart and Circulatory Physiology. The article, titled “Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor Inhibition Prevents Vascular Calcifying Extracellular Vesicle Biogenesis”, shows how EGFR inhibition significantly reduces vascular calcification by mitigating the release of CAV1-positive calcifying extracellular vesicles. Ph.D. student, Valentina Dargam, was selected as the 2022 Early Career Stop Heart Disease Researcher of the Year by the Florida Heart Research Foundation! Valentina was presented with this prestigious award of $50,000 at this year’s Annual Meeting of the Florida Chapter of the American College of Cardiology, held in Orlando, at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort. This award is made possible through the sale of the Stop Heart Disease specialty license plates, which funded the award. Congrats Valentina!

Our PI, Dr. Joshua Hurcheson, and Dr. Sharan Ramaswamy hosted the BME department’s annual Heart Day Symposium on Friday, February 18th, 2022. The symposium gathers cardiovascular researchers from across South Florida to discuss current research and lingering challenges in cardiovascular medicine. This all-day event will included seminars by Keith March (M.D., Ph.D.) and Tarak Rambhatla (M.D.), poster symposium featuring cardiovascular research trainees, and a panel discussion on issues and opportunities in cardiovascular medicine. Both grad and undergrad students from FIU presented their research, and Denise and Daniel (CMRL PhD students) won an award for their amazing presentations. Can’t wait till next year’s symposium!

The grant, titled ”Targeting the Caveolae-Dependent Mechanism of Calcifying Extracellular Vesicle Formation”, will allow Dr. Hutcheson and collaborator Dr. Jin He from FIU’s Department of Physics to conduct novel cardiovascular research targeting arterial calcification induced by chronic kidney disease. This $1.8M, 5-year grant will investigate how the formation of extracellular vesicles influence arterial calcification and test the therapeutic potential of altering vesicle formation in disease. Congrats on the hard work team – may this be the first of many!

This is a 1-year grant that provides $25,000 for innovative projects formulated around creating cost-effective technologies and systems at the point of care for underserved populations. Valentina Dargam (PhD student) and Maria Giraldo (Undergraduate researcher) just won second place at the 2019 Florida Blue Health Innovation Pitch Competition! The award includes $5,000 in prize money! They presented an entrepreneurial pitch related to Valentina’s graduate work on new diagnostic approaches for aortic valve disease. They participated on a summer long mentorship program to learn more about entrepreneurship and business development. In addition to winning the second prize at this competition, they were also invited to pitch their idea at another conference later in the year, and several potential investors and collaborators have expressed interest in helping move the idea forward.
